syria. hillary clinton had a statement out yesterday. she's in the czech republic, and she said this. i'm not going to telegraph in any specifics what we would do in the event there's credible evidence that the assad regime has resorted to using chemical weapons against their own people, but suffice it to say we are certainly planning to take action if that eventuality were to occur. first of all, what do you think that means, specifically? and, and what should it mean? >> i think it means that it's a red line for americans and the world. if that were to happen then i would expect some form of very tough military response. >> which would be what? >> i think it would be unlikely to speculate and specify right now and that's why she's being cautious in what she said. but up to now, what the west has been doing is giving some political support to the syrian opposition, obviously trying to resolve the situation as far as is possible. it's not been possible so far. >> and every day 100 people die or more. >> there are a lot of people dying. now the death toll probably would be around 40,000

against bill clinton. i think we've made progress in some other areas. clearly be done and we have the deniers of global warming, but we're reducing the amount of oil that we import. there is progress in that regard. on the other hand, there's been, i think, retrogression in the recognition of two of the great accomplishments of america in the 20th century, with social security and medicare. before those two, we did not have the possibility for the average older person who wasn't wealthy to have a decent existence in retirement. we now have that. i'm sorry to see that pulled back. there's also an international event, for the first time, and i think we have to recognize this. from 1940 to 1990 we had very heavily armed, very bad people threatening our very existence as a society. even though we may have exaggerated that a little bit at the end. we don't have that anymore. we have murderous thugs and terrorists but they're not the nazis or communists. they don't threaten our very existence. we have an ability now, i believe, to reduce some of the resources we put into self-protection

. going back to the clinton tax rates, remember, the average american family has taken a hit. median income four years ago was $54,000 a year. it is about $50,000 a year now. this portion of the population has been squeezed. adding taxes on 90% will not be helpful. how much do you want folks to bear? freezing those tax rates for the overwhelming majority of americans is a smart thing to do. host: you said fight later on. guest: the fight would start the next day. we could do what i'm talking about, and negotiations could continue. doing what i'm talking about does not violate what either side is fighting over. they both say this is something we want to do. why not make sure we do not have some last-minute failure at the end of december. guest: what gives you confidence that democrats would agree later on? guest: this is where i disagree with some of my colleagues. they seem to think the american people are leveraged, and this is the democrats leverage. our leverage is in the spending and entitlement issues. the president and his negotiators are smart and able people. they know the re
